People Disguised As Homeless Ignored By Loved Ones On Street In Stunning Social Experiment

If a family member posed as a homeless person, would you recognize him or her?
That's the question a new campaign -- Make Them Visible -- is asking. In a video produced by ad agency Silver + Partners and Smuggler for the New York City Rescue Mission, several people come face-to-face with their relatives and significant others dressed as homeless people. However, not a single participant recognizes their mother, brother or wife.
"There’s only one person that didn’t make it into the film -- because they couldn’t handle the fact that they walked by their family," video director Jun Diaz of Smuggler production company told Fast Company. "It happened every time."
The jarring social experiment, staged in Tribeca and Soho near the mission's shelter, shows just how invisible homeless people are to pedestrians on the street.
"We don't look at them. We don't take a second look," Michelle Tolson, director of public relations for the New York City Rescue Mission, told The Huffington Post.
Tolson explained that the ad agency and production company hired actors for a documentary video and quietly contacted each person's family to see if they would be interested in being apart of the social experiment. While the family members were in on the ruse, the participants had no idea they were being set up, and only learned after the fact when they watched themselves walk past their "homeless" family member.
"The experiment is a powerful reminder that the homeless are people, just like us, with one exception," Craig Mayes, executive director of New York City Rescue Mission, said in a statement provided to HuffPost. "They are in trouble and in pain. And they are someone's uncle or cousin or wife."

Magic Tip For Street Performers

24 Applicants Were Terrified To Do This Job. Then They Found Out Why Billions Already Do It.

Do you have what it takes to handle the World's Toughest Job? It requires more than 135 hours per week, constant mobility, keen coordination and adept communication. There are no breaks, no holidays off, and there is no pay.
Mullen, an advertising agency in Boston, posted a fake "Director of Operations" job listing online and in newspapers. The ad got 2.7 million impressions from paid ad placement, but only 24 people responded, according to Ad Week. Each of those people then sat down to interview for the job and all were shocked at what was required of them: no sitting, no vacations, no guaranteed sleep and zero money.
"Is that even legal?" one applicant asked. "Nobody is going to do that for free!" another responded.
But billions of people do all this each and every day. When the applicants found out just who holds the title of "World's Toughest Job," some were brought to tears.
The stunt might've been an ad for online greeting card seller Cardstore, but it sure puts things into perspective.

This Man Dressed Up Like A Waiter, And Served Homeless People A Proper Meal

DJ Sennett likes to film pranks in public.
In fact, with his group, PublicPrank, he's found YouTube success in secretly recording the jokes he and his friends pull in Los Angeles. But his latest video (above) is more likely to draw tears than laughs. In it, Sennett dresses up like a waiter and goes around town feeding the homeless.
Watch the clip above, and see what happens when a few people down on their luck receive a restaurant-worthy meal. We're a fan of a good public prank when the punchline is a dose of kindness.

Struggling Street Guitarist Gets A Big Surprise, And Now His Career Could Take Off

Andrew "Nelly" Niel had no idea what was coming.
Recently, he was sitting on the corner of a street in Brighton, England, picking away at his slide guitar as he often does, when he was approached by YouTube sensation and fellow guitarist Rob Chapman.
On Feb. 16, a few weeks earlier, Chapman had been walking those same streets when he heard the mesmerizing sounds of Niel's guitar for the first time. Inspired, he filmed Niel jamming and uploaded the video to YouTube. It quickly racked up more than 100,000 hits and earned 80 British pounds (about $132.) Now, Chapman was giving that money to its rightful owner.
"He looked pretty down and out," Chapman said in a phone interview with The Huffington Post.
Niel was once a well-known music producer and engineer, working with bands like Limp Bizket in the early 90s. But, after a personal tragedy rocked Niel's private life, his career began to suffer.
Now, things may be getting back on track for the talented guitarist.
In the video above, Chapman is seen surprising a grateful and touched Niel with the money, but also offering him something more valuable: An opportunity to create his own YouTube account and Facebook page so he can share his music again.
"He was born in the 60s and has been hiding from the world," Chapman told HuffPost. "He doesn't know how to use Facebook or YouTube."
After setting up the pages for Niel, Chapman said he was blown away by how quickly things have taken off.
"In one day he has 13,000 YouTube subscribers," he said.
While Chapman was speaking with HuffPost, Niel happened to stop by his apartment.
"It's crazy," Niel told HuffPost, when he got on the phone. "People come up to me [on the street] and go, 'you're the best guitarist I've ever seen! I haven't seen anything like this since '67!'"
Now, thanks to Chapman, we get to call ourselves fans too.
